Seventh Generation, Method and other leading personal care and cleaning brands may soon face lawsuits if they don’t remove the word “organic” from their labeling and marketing by Sept. 1. The ultimatum comes following a recent investigation by the Organic Consumers Assn., which uncovered a potentially carcinogenic contaminant in various products.
The OCA investigated nearly 100 organic cosmetic, personal care and household cleaning formulas, and found that nearly 50% of them contain detectable levels of 1,4-dioxane, which is known to cause cancer in lab animals. None of the manufacturers disclosed this information on their labels, even though many had levels greater than 1,000 times the acceptable level.
The biggest offenders were the “natural” dish detergents, including Citrus Magic 100% Natural Dish Liquid, Earth Friendly Products Ultra Dishmate, Method Dish Naturally Derived Ultra Concentrate, Planet Ultra Dishwashing Liquid and Seventh Generation Natural Dish Liquid.
Method, San Francisco, refuted the study saying it never made the claim on labels that its products are natural or organic. “We state that our products are naturally-derived,” said rep Katie Molinari.
The findings were released by the OCA, which is based in Washington, on Friday in Anaheim, Calif., at the Natural Products Expo West trade show.
David Steinman, a consumer advocate and author who directed the study, called the findings a wake-up call for the natural products industry: “To knowingly and unnecessarily put carcinogens into commerce in these modern times is cynical and barbaric. It betrays the public trust.”
The brands will have to remove all “organic” branding and labeling from their packaging by Sept. 1. Manufacturers have until April 20 to agree to the terms, said Adam Eidinger, principal with Mintwood Media, Washington, a consulting firm that works with the OCA.
“If [manufacturers] do not comply, they will face a lawsuit accusing them of false and deceptive advertising and unfair and unlawful business practice under California law,” Eidinger said. “No one is regulating natural claims and these carcinogens have cumulative effects on humans and the environment. Something needs to be done to create higher standards for these products.”
The lawsuit will be filed on behalf of the national OCA, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Escondido, Calif., and the regional Organic Consumers Assn. chapter in Little Marais, Minn.
While 1,4-dioxane is present in many conventional personal care products such as shampoos and body washes, as well as household cleaning products, the issue at hand has to do with mislabeling products that consumers deem organic and natural, which implies they are free of chemicals and harmful ingredients.
The OCA study also revealed that all products certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program were free of 1,4-dioxane. In order to receive the seal, 95% or more of the ingredients have to be organic. Brands found not to contain 1,4-dioxane include Burt’s Bees, Clorox Green Works, Avalon Organics and Dr. Bronner’s

Why I love the Wellness Company so much !

I have four children and a few of them with health issues, this is why I started with this company! Here is a story that I can say is unbelievable. A few weekends ago I was doing my spring cleaning before I got my first Melaleuca order, afterwards my son had an Asthma Attack within a few hours after I cleaned. The next few days was back and forth to the hospital! So the doctor said it was time to put him in the hospital. That Tuesday I got my first shipment from Melaleuca. Cleaned my house and opened the windows like always. That Friday my son came home from the hospital after I had cleaned my house with my Melaleuca cleaners and he never had another attack. I also had forgotten to open the windows after he got home, there was no smell that bothered him. The following Wednesday I took my son to the doctors and she asked what I did because there were no signs that my son had an asthma attack. I told her “I went green”! My son’s doctor told me to send her flyers to keep in the office, there are a lot of people that come in there that this could help. She just wanted to know my secret! I did not think when I signed up, that Melaleuca “The Wellness Company” could have possibly helped my 6 year boy with his Asthma. My son has never recovered that fast from an attack like that.

Phthalates found in urine of infants after they were powdered or lotioned

Babies absorb phthalates from baby products

updated 5:43 p.m. ET, Mon., Feb. 4, 2008
CHICAGO – Baby shampoos, lotions and powders may expose infants to chemicals that have been linked with possible reproductive problems, a small study suggests.

The chemicals, called phthalates, are found in many ordinary products including cosmetics, toys, vinyl flooring and medical supplies. They are used to stabilize fragrances and make plastics flexible.

In the study, they were found in elevated levels in the urine of babies who’d been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with baby products.

Phthalates (pronounced thowl-ates) are under attack by some environmental advocacy groups, but experts are uncertain what dangers, if any, they might pose. The federal government doesn’t limit their use, although California and some countries have restricted their use.

Animal studies have suggested that phthalates can cause reproductive birth defects and some activists believe they may cause reproductive problems in boys and early puberty in girls.

No evidence of actual harm
Rigorous scientific evidence in human studies is lacking. The current study offers no direct evidence that products the infants used contained phthalates, and no evidence that the chemicals in the babies’ urine caused any harm. Still, the results worried environmental groups that support restrictions on these chemicals.

“There is an obvious need for laws that force the beauty industry to clean up its act,” said Stacy Malkan of Health Care Without Harm.

Is shampoo hurting your baby? Join the chat.

From the chemicals in shampoo thread:

“Our kids are being exposed to more chemicals in their daily life they need to be. There’s no need to eliminate everything, but we have to be more careful of what they are getting. Be vigilant. Stop being too busy to pay attention.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana, a University of Washington pediatrician, said, “The bottom line is that these chemicals likely do exist in products that we’re commonly using on our children and they potentially could cause health effects.”

Babies don’t usually need special lotions and powders, and water alone or shampoo in very small amounts is generally enough to clean infant hair, Sathyanarayana said.

Concerned parents can seek products labeled “phthalate-free,” or check labels for common phthalates, including DEP and DEHP.

But the chemicals often don’t appear on product labels. That’s because retail products aren’t required to list individual ingredients of fragrances, which are a common phthalate source.

The Food and Drug Administration “has no compelling evidence that phthalates pose a safety risk when used in cosmetics,” spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek said. “Should new data emerge, we will inform the public as well as the industry.”

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the health effects in humans are uncertain.

“Although several studies in people have explored possible associations with developmental and reproductive outcomes (semen quality, genital development in boys, shortened pregnancy, and premature breast development in young girls), more research is needed,” a 2005 CDC report said.

The new study, which appears in February’s issue of the journal Pediatrics, involved 163 babies. Most were white, ages 2 to 28 months and living in California, Minnesota and Missouri.

The researchers measured levels of several phthalates in urine from diapers. They also asked the mothers about use in the previous 24 hours of baby products including lotions, powders, diaper creams and baby wipes.

Highest levels in youngest babies
All urine samples had detectable levels of at least one phthalate, and most had levels of several more. The highest levels were linked with shampoos, lotions and powders, and were most prevalent in babies younger than 8 months.

John Bailey, chief scientist at the Personal Care Products Council, questioned the methods and said the phthalates could have come from diapers, lab materials or other sources.

“Unfortunately, the researchers of this study did not test baby care products for the presence of phthalates or control for other possible routes of exposure,” Bailey said.

Why even take the risk of exposing your children to crazy chemicals like this?! As consumers we have choices! We can be Green, we can make sure our babies are not being exposed to this type of stuff. Take a stand! Ban products like this from your home, and earn an income at the same time. Please think about what you could be doing for your kids! You shouldn’t regret it.What more can you ask for?!! Go to my website to request more info. www.workathomeunited.com/brandy I will personally call you.

LUPUS AND FIBORMYALGIA

Filed under: Uncategorized — by workathomeunitedbrandy @ 5:04 am

Lupus and Fibromyalgia After a year of bizarre symptoms and unbearable pain, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus and its companion, Fibromyalgia. The medical answer was to take a powerful anti-malarial drug that has side effects that are accumulative and irreversible, (i.e.) pigment deposits on the retina that would cause eventual blindness, chronic diarrhea (embarrassing and uncomfortable) causing a depletion of potassium and other trace mineral. None too sure that the cure wasn’t worse than the disease I began to try to find an alternative treatment. It took six years before someone introduced me to Melaleuca. After only two months following the regimen recommended by Dr. Ramero, the joint pain has subsided, my energy level is unbelievable and my blood pressure no longer requires prescription medication, and I am taking only half my dose of Plaquenil. It is my sincere belief that anyone with Lupus would benefit from the following Melaleuca products: REPLENEX: One capsule three times a day. VITALITY PAK: one vitamin and one calcium tablet, twice a day. CELL WISE: one tablet three times a day PROVEX: one capsule three times a day for first two weeks, then change to PROVEXPLUS, two capsules, three times a day Eight glasses of water a day May drink cup of Ginseng Tea, may add teaspoon honey Drink cup hot Herbal Tea before bed time Stay away from high inflammatory foods Stay away from all sugar It will take 14 to 21 days for treatment to saturate the tissues. Hope this helps everyone as much as it helps me.
