New Report: No More Toxic Tub
Getting Contaminants Out of Children’s Bath & Personal Care Products
by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

Despite marketing claims like “gentle” and “pure,” dozens of top-selling children’s bath products are contaminated with the cancer-causing chemicals formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, according to the March 2009 Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report, “No More Toxic Tub.”

This study is the first to document the widespread presence of both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane  in bath products for children, including baby shampoos, bubble baths and baby lotions. Many products tested contained both chemicals.
What We Found

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned an independent laboratory to test 48 products for 1,4-dioxane; 28 of those products were also tested for formaldehyde. The lab found that:
17 out of 28 products tested – 61 percent – contained both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.
23 out of 28 products – 82 percent – contained formaldehyde at levels ranging from 54 to 610 parts per million (ppm).
32 out of 48 products – 67 percent – contained 1,4-dioxane at levels ranging from 0.27 to 35 ppm.

Health Concerns

While a single product might not be cause for concern, the reality is that babies may be exposed to several products at bath time, several times a week, in addition to other chemical exposures in the home and environment. Those small exposures add up and may contribute to later-life disease.

Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane are known carcinogens; formaldehyde can also trigger skin rashes in some children. Unlike many other countries, the U.S. government does not limit formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, or most other hazardous substances in personal care products.
Where They Come From

The chemicals were not disclosed on product labels because they’re contaminants, not ingredients, and therefore are exempt from labeling laws.

Formaldehyde contaminates personal care products when common preservatives release formaldehyde over time in the container. Common ingredients likely to contaminate products with formaldehyde include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea.

1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a chemical processing technique called ethoxylation, in which cosmetic ingredients are processed with ethylene oxide. Manufacturers can easily remove the toxic byproduct, but are not required by law to do so. Common ingredients likely to be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane include PEG-100 stearate, sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene and ceteareth-20.
What You Can Do

Contrary to industry statements, there are no regulatory standards that limit formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane or most other toxic chemicals in personal care products sold in the United States. There are signs the U.S. is gearing to catch up, but for now it’s up to consumers to consider carefully before they buy. Here’s some suggestions for safeguarding your family’s health:
Simplify: Select products with fewer ingredients and no synthetic fragrance or dyes, and use fewer products overall.
Choose safety: Search EWG’s cosmetic safety database, Skin Deep, to learn more about the products you use and find safer alternatives. Also check out EWG’s Safety Guide to Children’s Personal Care Products.
Read labels: Select products for baby and yourself that don’t contain the ingredients listed above, which are commonly contaminated with formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane.
Take action! Can’t memorize these lists? Nobody can. If harmful contaminants and ingredients weren’t allowed in products, you wouldn’t have to. Tell Congress you want safe cosmetics for babies, adults and everyone in between.
Spread the word: Send an e-card letting friends and family know about this report.

Frank L. Vandersloot
President/CEO
Melaleuca Inc.

Dear Mr. Vandersloot,

Re: Updated Testimonial on how Melaleuca has Enhanced My Life.

I would like to submit this letter as an update to a previous letter of my story. Some of the leaders in my area had requested a copy of my original letter and they have
shown the letter to a few people in hope that if they had any questions, they could call me. Since then I have had many phone calls about my experience.

I am currently 25 years old. Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with having a chronic disease called Fibromyalgia. to describe this disease, It?s a combination between
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Arthritis. It?s similar to CFS in the same sense that you always feel tired, weak, lack energy, suffer from bouts of depression and
serious mood swings. It?s similar to Arthritis in the way that Fibromyalgia sufferers are always in pain, but the Fibromyalgia pain is considered ten times more acute (or painful)
than arthritic pain. As you can tell, if you have Fibromyalgia, you don?t have much of a life. There are some people with this disease that need the help of someone to get them
out of bed, into a bath tub full of warm water, and physically move their arms and legs for them so that they can get the blood flowing, to be able to move on their own later.

Needless to say, this is a paralyzing disease. What makes it more difficult is that most doctors (until recently) didn?t even believe that this disease existed! They just told you
that all the pain and tiredness was in your head! This disease is becoming quite common now, more and more doctors are starting to believe that his is an actual disease.
But still they have no cure. They just put you on different medications like anti-depressants, painkillers, muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, etc. They told me that I just had
to accept the fact that I would always have this disease and I must learn to deal with it. What kind of life is that?! It wasn?t the kind of life I wanted, that?s for sure!

In June of 1995 something changed. I was introduced to Melaleuca by a business associate of mine, Jerry Courtois. I had spoken to him about my health problems before and
he suggested that I start taking the Vitality Pack and the new anti-oxidant, Provex. I had taken various other vitamin supplements, so called “miracle elixirs” and herbs from other
companies (like everyone else who has Fibromyalgia), but didn?t get much in the way of results. But after about 6 weeks of taking the vitamins and the Provex, I started to notice
that I wasn?t as tired anymore and had more energy. It wasn?t until after eight weeks that I actually believed I was getting better from these vitamins. I was actually able to start
riding a bicycle to where I worked during the day and start exercising regularly. These where things that I thought I would never do again. Now I was!

In November 1995, I went to see my doctor for my usual check up. The doctor sent me for the usual tests (tender points, etc.), to see how I was coping with this disease. A week
later the doctor?s office called and said there was something strange with the last test they had done and wanted me to get more tests done. I went back to the doctor a week later
and here?s what he said, “All the tests we have done show that you have a complete clean bill of health! There are no signs of Fibromyalgia anywhere. You don?t even have one
tender point area.” Needless to say, I was very happy but not shocked. I had been feeling better in the last five months than I had in the previous six years put together. The only thing
I had changed in my life was taking the Vitality Pak and the Provex and I got rid of all the toxic chemicals in my house. Nothing else!

As of January 1996, I have been completely off all the medication that I was on for over six years.

In September 1996, my doctor asked me to come in for a complete check up and to see if there was any signs of
Fibromyalgia coming back. I am pleased to say that I still had a
clean bill of health- and still do!

The latest story is this. I have suffered from very bad allergies to things such as trees, grass, mold, dust, pollen, and approximately 31 other things

for about fifteen years, thus resulting in allergy testing every two years and allergy infections every two weeks. Needless to say needles don?t bother me!
Boy was I in for a surprise! The doctor told me I didn?t need to get allergy infections anymore! I later found out that the Provex helps with allergies.
Well it sure surprised me!

I have told my testimonial at several Melaleuca presentations around my area and every time, someone comes up to me later and asks for my name
and number because they know of someone with Fibromyalgia. I hope that others can benefit from my story. I would love to help enhance their lives, like Melaleuca has enhanced mine.

Sincerely,

Mark Lawrence

I’m Officially Green!

Well, I decided to go ahead and do it!   I’ve formally joined Melaleuca again, and now it’s time to get busy doing my homework on their products while going green!  I’d decided last week I didn’t want to put off buying some of Melaleuca’s MelaPower and MelaSoft any longer.   MelaPower was no doubt my favorite Melaleuca product!  I’m the type of person who isn’t thrilled about shopping in the first place.  Standing in the detergent isle at WalMart sniffing this washing powder and that washing powder really sucks.  I even asked my sister what she uses because her clothes always smell so good.  I bought and tried what she uses and the result just wasn’t the same.  My clothes still didn’t have that smell I wanted them to have.  The only place to get that smell again was through Melaleuca!

I guess that’s what really got me thinking about Melaleuca again.  I’d joined years ago and really could have cared less about what was friendly to the environment,  much less having to tell someone about it, regardless if there was money to be made in the long run.   I do know as far back as I’ve known about Melaleuca,  everything they said and promoted had something to do with being environmentally friendly or good for you.

Now we shall try it and see!  Right now I’d like to personally go green and learn all I can.  Then I can actually help others go green and lead healthier lives.  Not only that….  Going Green brings in Green!!   You can also make money while buying products that are friendly to use and are delivered right to your door!

I know by now Jesse is wondering where the hell I went.  I just joined and now I’m already lost in my own little world!  (btw Tim and Linda Hutchinson are my original sponsors from way back in the day!)  Guess i’ll go do the routine stuff and set up my Melalauca website now!   :)

Make Green $ Going Green

Yes, you heard right!  There is an additional perk to Going Green with Melaleuca!  You can actually make money.. cash…  green stuff… just by telling other people about Melaleuca.

Melaleuca has created a business structure that allows you to begin earning additional income, achieve your dreams of self-sufficiency, and gain the flexibility and control you’ve always wanted, without having to worry about start-up costs and inventory—you simply begin referring customers to Melaleuca.  With a little effort, debt can begin to melt away and your personal freedom is expanded.

That’s the plan in a nutshell!  You can make money by just referring others to shop where you do!  The benefits of buying healthier products without leaving home, having them delivered to your door, AND the ability to make money at the same time can only be called one thing…. SWEEET!

It’s ALL about the referrals!   Melaleuca’s strategy is to have customers purchase only the products they need and will use in their home on a monthly basis.
There is -    NO  large investments     NO inventory
NO taking orders and making deliveries     NO billing and collections
NO pressuring customers to purchase     NO repeat sales presentations
NO risk—simply switch stores and save!

Every time you refer someone to Melaleuca, you earn commission on every product that customer orders. You also earn commission on the product orders made by customers that others have referred in your organization.  Before you know it, you’ll have others shopping greener, easier and you’ll also be helping someone else make a little (or alot) of Green in their pocket too!

Check out my Melaleuca links and information.  When you’re ready to go green just contact me either on Yahoo messenger as babybrandy_17 or email me at workathomeuntiedbrandy and we can go green together!!@gmail.com

Melaleuca has changed quite a bit since the last time I was a customer there. The idea remains the same both for safer products, as well as a good income when worked as a business. I know the routine by heart…. buy my stuff there instead of Wal Mart, it’s delivered to my door and it’s better, healthier products! Pretty straight forward it seems. I know this is pretty simple to comprehend, but in my head it was always a business and business means sales. I’ll mention now I HATE SALES. Want to know what I hate even more? Well let me tell you COLD CALLING SUCKS! What I liked and still do about Melaleuca is, it isn’t sales. I don’t have to sell you (aka convince you) to buy washing powder, you’re going to buy it anyway. I don’t have to tell you about buying dish soap, you’re going to buy it anyway. What I WILL tell you is by shopping at Melaleuca instead of the local grocery store it is possible to make money while doing so and sharing your idea with others! Not a bad deal. Do you know this month if 8 of your friends become a preferred customer and do the same thing, you can make $120 a month? THIS my friend, is DOABLE! How cool is that?

WHY CANCER’S IS GAINING ON US

As a cancer survivor, this topic is very near and dear to my heart! We have all been touched with cancer…a loved one, family member, a dear friend…DON’T WAIT! Get educated today!!!!

————————–————————–————————–

Why cancer’s gaining on us

By Rita Arditti

October 27, 2008

FOR ALL the pink ribbons, breast-cancer awareness events, fund-raisers, and celebrations of “survivorship,” the facts remain grim. In this country, a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is one in eight. In 1975, the risk was about one in 11.

Outside of skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. It is estimated that in 2008 there will be 250,230 new cases of breast cancer among women. An estimated 41,000 women will die of metastatic breast cancer in 2008. Because we still do not know what the causes of breast cancer are, primary prevention remains an elusive goal while mammography and early detection are the focus of attention.

Since World War II, the proliferation of synthetic chemicals has gone hand-in-hand with the increased incidence of breast cancer. About 80,000 synthetic chemicals are used today in the United States, and their number increases by about 1,000 each year. Only about 7 percent of them have been screened for their health effects. These chemicals can persist in the environment and accumulate in our bodies. According to a recent review by the Silent Spring Institute in Newton, 216 chemicals and radiation sources cause breast cancer in animals.

Nearly all of the chemicals cause mutations, and most cause tumors in multiple organs and animal species, findings that are generally believed to indicate they likely cause cancer in humans. Yet few have been closely studied by regulatory bodies. There is concern about benzene, which is in gasoline; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are in air pollution from vehicle exhaust, tobacco smoke, and charred foods; ethylene oxide, which is widely used in medical settings; and methylene chloride, a common solvent in paint strippers and glues.

There is also broad agreement that exposure over time to natural estrogens in the body increases the risk of breast cancer, so it is important to consider the role of synthetic estrogens in breast cancer development. Many other chemicals, especially endocrine-disrupting compounds – chemicals that affect hormones, such as the ubiquitous bisphenol A, which is found in plastic bottles and cans – are also thought to raise breast cancer risk. Endocrine-disrupting compounds are present in many pesticides, fuels, plastics, air pollution, detergents, industrial solvents, tobacco smoke, prescription drugs, food additives, metals, and personal-care products including sunscreens.

Is there definitive evidence that these substances cause breast cancer? Have they been sufficiently studied? Well, no. We need to know more about the timing, duration, and patterns of exposure, which may be as important as dosage. But shouldn’t we do everything possible to reduce exposure to the suspected chemicals? Shouldn’t we take precautionary measures, as we continue and deepen the research? In Massachusetts, the leading cause of death in 2006 was cancer. It is time for action.

In our state, the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, a coalition of more than 160 organizations, has worked for the passage of the Safer Alternatives Bill, which would create a program to replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives when feasible. The bill would establish a pragmatic, gradual approach to reducing health impacts from many of the toxic chemicals that we are exposed to in everyday life. The bill passed the Senate unanimously this year, but was not voted on by the House. The alliance will introduce it again in the 2009 legislative session.

Yes, we need early detection but also primary prevention, and, of course, effective treatments for those of us with extended disease. Rachel Carson, who herself died of breast cancer in 1964, said it best: “For those in whom [cancer] is already a hidden or a visible presence, efforts to find cures must of course continue. But for those not yet touched by the disease and certainly for the generations as yet unborn, prevention is the imperative need.”

Success is for the people at the precipice. The entrepreneurs, innovators, risk takers, and dreamers. Remember to never stop thinking. Proactively seek out fresh ideas and fresh answers. Find partners. Remember that you are only as smart as the people that you surround yourself with. Seek out people who are smarter, more talented, more successful, more giving, more loving than you. Nurture them. Reward them… because they are part of your future. Become leaders of change. Become a Leader that helps others step into the light and become the leaders that they too were born to be. Move forward. Find your buzz. Create a buzz. Stir things up. Remember that life is a continual uncovering. Most of all discover the things that thrill you and do them. Shift your thinking from what is usual and predictable to what is possible. Dream again. Dream big. Be generous with your time, your love, and your spirit….take the time to brighten someone else’s day every day. Breathe. Rest. Play. Work hard. Live your Life TODAY….don’t wait until everything looks a certain way, or lines up just how you think it should, or likely, you will wait your entire life to start living it. At some point each and every day allow yourself to be amazed…..

AMWAY GLOBAL INITIATES NATIONWIDE RECALL OF NUTRILITE ENERGY BARS

Amway Global Initiates Nationwide Recall of NUTRILITE Energy Bars Because of Possible Health Risk (January 23)
Fri, 23 Jan 2009 17:29:00 -0600
Amway Global is initiating a voluntary recall on three of our NUTRILITE energy bars because we have been informed that Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is one of the peanut paste suppliers that our vendor used to make our energy bars. The FDA and other regulatory agencies have indicated that PCA is the focus of their investigation concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by contaminated peanut butter. Amway Global has taken this voluntary step as a precaution while the FDA continues its investigation into the unresolved national outbreak. No other NUTRILITE products are involved in the recall.

FEAR OF FAILURE: WHAT DOES FAILURE MEAN TO YOU ?

*** Article:  Fear of Failure: What Does Failure Mean to You? – By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. ***
————————————————————

What do you believe about failure?

The ego wounded part of ourselves, the left-brain part of ourselves that has been programmed with many false beliefs, often believes that:

“If I fail, I am a failure.”
“If I fail, I am stupid.”
“If I fail, no one will like me or value me.”
“If I fail, then there is no point in ever trying again.”
“If I fail, it brands me for life as incompetent.”
“If I fail, then everyone who thought I was smart will now think I am stupid.”
“If I fail, I will have made a fool of myself.”

On the other hand, the loving adult part of us — our right brain, open, creative, and learning part of us — generally believes that:

“If I fail, then I just need to work harder, to put in more effort.”
“If I fail, I will have learned valuable lessons that will eventually lead to success.”
“Failure is a part of life. No one succeeds without some failure.”
“Failure does not at all reflect on my worth as a person. I am intrinsically worthy, regardless of success or failure.”
“Failure offers me incredible opportunities to think outside the box, to think creatively. Let’s get to work!”
“I love learning, and I love challenges. What I do is not about success or failure — it is about the joy of creativity, learning, and expressing who I am.”

Which way of thinking prevails within you? What are the consequences to you of allowing yourself to think from your wounded self instead of from your loving adult?

Failure – A Part of Life

The fact is that mistakes and failure ARE a part of life. Instead of fearing them, why not make it okay to make mistakes and to fail? Why not take the onus off of failure? Why not embrace the process of learning and growing instead of only being focused on the outcome of your efforts? Why not focus on enjoying the process of learning and creating something that is important to you?

People who don’t worry about success or failure, who instead are excited about their learning and growing process, generally find their way to succeed. The reason for this is that they don’t let failure stop them. Instead, failure spurs them on to work harder, to put forth even more effort to learn what they need to learn to succeed.

On the other hand, even very smart people, who are dominated by their ego-wounded selves, generally allow failure to derail them. Believing they ARE a failure if they fail, they become too afraid to make more effort. In addition, they often believe that success or failure is not dependent on effort, but on ability. When this is their belief, they often give up at the first sign of failure, fearing that, if their natural intelligence and ability is not leading to success, then there is no point in trying harder.

Creating Success

Every successful person knows that effort, creativity, openness to learning, and perseverance are what create success, not necessarily high intelligence, talent, or ability. Every truly successful person is someone who has not allowed failure to stop him or her from forging ahead with passion and purpose.

I encourage you to tell yourself that it is okay to make mistakes and okay to fail. I encourage you to see mistakes and failures as wonderful learning opportunities for growth. I encourage you to let go of the outcome and allow yourself to become fully excited about the process of learning, of growth, and of creation. Being fully present and excited for the process is what life is all about!
