Avon vs The Wellness Company

Hi there~

I used to be with Avon for about 6 years and was involved in all aspects of the company, from Leadership, to Unit Leader and Team Leader, Beauty Advisor. When I did Avon my children were small. I enjoyed it because it got me out of the house and some social interaction with all my customers. But there are many differences between the Wellness company and Avon. First of all it is a very good company that caters to personal service, helping your customers select their colors and the prices can be extremely reasonable. So there is a good market for that. But what happens is that you have to call folks every 2 weeks to see if they want to place an order. We order our own books which for 100 books is about $20, and that is done every campaign. Most folks throw those out and don’t order from them so I found it hard to swallow at times. Many times due to sales you would have an order for a $2.99 lipstick. You could carry samples but the colors changed so frequently that it was expensive to keep them all. So if someone didn’t like the color, all the products were guaranteed, I would have to replace it. Travel time was insane, back and forth to people�s homes, with my children riding around in their car seats. I put a ton of miles on my car for a $5 order. I usually had to bribe my children with ice cream or a stop somewhere just to get them to tolerate me for a while. We couldn�t do anything, go to the beach, go to school, without a bunch of stops along the way. I dreaded delivery day, because I was a president�s club member and that means that I had sales of about $14,000 per year, which is a LOT of Avon. My commission on that was $40%, but then I had to spend a LOT on business tools like brochures, and samples, and demo products, because if you could show folks the products they were more likely to buy them. So I think my biggest net year was like $4000, and that didn’t include the wear and tear on my car.

So when I found The Wellness Company, I had a customer base of almost 200 customers, and I knew if I could find somebody to replace me and continue to service those folks, I was ready to give it up and give The Wellness Company everything I had, but when I first started I figured I could do both. That didn’t even make sense after I started using the The Wellness Company products. You know when I quit completely? I had talked to one of my Avon customers about The Wellness Company, because I knew that she wanted a more natural product. And she told me, tell me which product you think is better? The rest is history! I gave all my customers away, and I haven’t looked back. Even though that was considered a home-based business, you know with all the out of home deliveries, etc. I really wasn’t working from home. Now I get to.

As for creating a down-line, and being a team leader, I was responsible for collecting the orders and payments on the girls in my area. Every other Friday night, I had to hunt people down to bring their orders, I dealt with payment issues, you name it. I LOVE that The Wellness Company takes care of all that for us.

One more thing! There was a gal that was the top seller in our district. She sold about $60,000 per year in products. I know she was in her car for at least 40 hours delivering every other week. DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT’S IN YOU PRODUCTS ??

When we pick up a product at the local grocery store, most of us like to think we are getting something that has been tested and proven to be safe. After all, we have laws to protect our health and safety, don’t we? Actually, the government has very limited power to regulate manufacturers, or require testing of their products. Here are some disturbing facts: A product that kills 50% of lab animals through ingestion or inhalation can still receive the federal regulatory designation non-toxic . Of the 17,000 chemicals that appear in common household products, only 30% have been adequately tested for their negative effects on our health; less than 10% have been tested for their effect on the nervous system; and nothing is known about the combined effects of these chemicals when mixed within our bodies. No law requires manufacturers to list the exact ingredients on the package label. Personal care product refers to just about anything we use to clean our bodies or make ourselves look or smell good. The closest thing to a regulatory agency for the personal care industry is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and their power is extremely limited. Here are more unsettling facts regarding personal care products: The FDA cannot regulate a personal care product until after it is released into the marketplace. Neither personal care products nor their ingredients are reviewed or approved before they are sold to the public. The FDA cannot require companies to do safety testing on their personal products before they are sold to the public. The FDA cannot require recalls of harmful personal care products from the marketplace. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and health (NIOSH) analyzed 2983 chemicals used in personal care products. The results were as follows: 884 of the chemicals were toxic 314 caused biological mutation 218 caused reproductive complications 778 caused acute toxicity 148 caused tumors 376 caused skin and eye irritations. Warning: You Can’t Trust Warning Labels! You may think you know what is in a product and its potential harms by reading ingredient and warning labels. Think again. Manufacturers are not required to list the exact ingredients on the label. Also, chemical names are often disguised by using innocuous trade names. So, even if the chemical is listed on the label, you may not recognize it for what it is. Even if the harsh and dangerous active ingredients are listed on a package, often time the remainder of ingredients are lumped into a category known as inert (not active) ingredients. This term may lead you to believe that these chemicals are not toxic or hazardous. In fact, many of the 1,000 different chemicals used as inert ingredients are more harmful than the active ingredients. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not require manufacturers to identify most inert chemicals, or disclose their potential harmful effects. Even suspected carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) are used as inert ingredients in household products. Regarding warning labels. One New York study found that 85% of products they examined had incorrect warning labels. Some were labeled poisonous, but weren’t; others were poisonous but weren’t labeled as such; others gave incorrect first aid information. And there are absolutely no warnings on products about possible negative effects of long-term exposure. This is unfortunate because most diseases linked to chemical exposure are the result of long-term exposure. If we don’t know what is in it, and we don’t know if it can hurt us, how are we supposed to make an intelligent decision about whether or not to bring this product into our home? Cleaning products (just a few that I know are used in house cleaning) Air freshener- toxic; may cause cancer; irritates, nose, throat, and lungs. Disinfectant- very toxic; causes skin, throat, and lung burns; causes coma. Drain cleaner- toxic; causes skin burns; causes liver and kidney damage. Oven cleaner – toxic; causes skin, throat and lung burns. Window Cleaner- toxic; causes cns disorders; causes liver and kidney disorders. Floor/Furniture polish – toxic causes cns disorders, may cause lung cancer Spot remover- toxic; may cause cancer, may cause liver damage. All Purpose Cleaner – causes eye damage; irritates nose, throat and lungs. Toilet bowl cleaner – very toxic; causes skin, nose, throat and lung burns. Chlorinated scouring powder- toxic; highly irritating to nose, throat and lungs. Dishwasher Detergent – toxic; causes eye injuries, damage to mucous membranes and throat. As I said just a few. One Common Ingredient Although it would take a second book to cover all the ingredients commonly used in the products above, I want to let you know about one, formaldehyde, as an example. Formaldehyde is used frequently in both cleaning and personal care products because it is a cheap preservative. The following information is taken from a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which , by law, must be supplied to anyone who uses any chemical product in the workplace. The MSDS for formaldehyde warns: Suspected carcinogen; may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin; causes burns; inhalation can cause spasms; edema (fluid buildup) of the larynx and bronchi, and chemical pneumonitis, extremely destructive to the tissue of the mucous membrane. All these symptoms and more are caused by formaldehyde. Yet manufacturers can put formaldehyde in shampoo and not list it as an ingredient! You will be shocked to learn that formaldehyde is a common ingredient in baby shampoo, bubble bath, deodorants, perfume, cologne, hair dye, mouthwash, toothpaste, hair spray and many other personal care items. Formaldehyde is a suspected carcinogen. If all cancers start with the abnormal growth of just one cell, then why allow any amount into or onto your body? Toxic Chemicals and the Human Body Your body is a very complex, very fragile system of chemical reactions and electrical impulses. When you consider a single cell breathes, uses energy, and releases waste much like your whole body does, you can begin to understand how even small amounts of harmful chemicals can affect the performance of the body’s processes. Chemicals enter the human body in three ways: ingestion, inhalation, and absorption. Ingestion Ingestion brings to mind the image of a young child opening the cabinet under the sink and drinking something deadly. Well, each year nearly 1.5 million accidental ingestions of poisons are reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers. The majority of the victims are under the age of twelve and have swallowed a cleaning or personal care product. It amazes me how many deadly chemicals are stored under sinks or on bathroom counters and bathtubs within easy reach of young children. Inhalation It may surprise you to learn that poisoning by inhalation is more common and can be much more harmful, than ingestion. When something harmful is swallowed, the stomach actually begins breaking down and neutralizing the poison before it is absorbed into the bloodstream. However, when you inhale toxic fumes, the poisons go directly into the bloodstream and quickly travel to organs like the brain, heart, liver and kidneys. Many products give off toxic vapors which can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and lungs, and give you headaches, muscle aches, and sinus infections. The process of releasing vapors into the air is called outgassing. Outgassing occurs even when a chemical is tightly sealed in its container. If you doubt this, simply walk down the cleaning aisle at your local grocery store, and notice how strongly it smells of toxic vapors, even though the containers are sealed tight. Absorption Most people never guess this. Finally, you need to realize the potential threat absorption poses. One square centimeter of skin (less than the size of a dime), contains 3 million cells, four yards of nerves, one yard of blood vessels, and one hundred sweat glands. We’ve all heard the ads for nicotine patches and analgesic creams. These medicines work by being absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Even some heart medicines are administered through transdermal (through the skin) patches. Any chemical that touches the skin can be absorbed and spread throughout the body. This can even happen when you come in contact with a surface that was treated with a chemical days or even weeks earlier. The Law of Sowing and Reaping by Jim Rohn
Now, here’s the second law that changed my life forever in network marketing. I learned the law of sowing and reaping. And in the law of sowing and reaping is also the story of the law of averages.
Jot this down…the story of the sower. It comes from the Bible. I am an amateur on the Bible, but this is such a useful story. Here’s what the story says, and take notes, because the drama’s in the details.
The sower was ambitious. Evidently, he was ambitious. When you read the whole story you’ll conclude yes, this was an ambitious sower.
Here was number two. He had excellent seed. The sower who sowed the seed had excellent seed. And the excellent seed could be an excellent opportunity, an excellent product, an excellent story.
So we’ve got an ambitious sower with excellent seed. But now here are the rest of the details of the story. For your information, for the drama of your life, so you can understand things better, learning some of this is how I got rich by age 31.
The sower goes out to sow the seed, but the first part of the seed falls by the wayside and the birds get it.
So jot this down. The birds are going to get some of the seed. The birds are going to get some of the seed.
Now you say, “Mr. Rohn, what does that mean?”
Well, I invited John to come to a meeting. He said he’d be there Tuesday night. Tuesday night I show up. John isn’t there. I say, “I wonder why John didn’t make it.”
Now I know the answer. The birds! The birds! John had this great idea of coming to the meeting to look at an opportunity, and somebody stole it and said, “You’re not going to go see network marketing.” And he says, “Well, maybe not.”
So have you jotted that down now? The birds are going to get some.
Now when the birds get some, you’ve got two options. Number one is to chase birds. You say, “Well, let me get hold of the person who talked him out of coming to the meeting. I’ll tear him a new page.” I wouldn’t do this.
Here’s what happens if you go chasing birds. You leave the field. If you go chasing birds now, you leave the field. Which is going to distract from your future, not add? So you can’t chase birds and try to straighten this stuff out.
Here’s what it is. It’s just one of those things, and here’s the best comment when things are a little disappointing. “Isn’t that interesting?”
You just have to say, “I thought sure he would be there. He promised me. He promised me! But I know it was the birds.” And you just have to say, “Isn’t that interesting?”
Now here’s the rest of the story.
The sower kept on sowing. See, that was the secret to his success. He kept on sowing. And if you keep sowing, you can sow more than the birds can get because there aren’t enough birds. If you keep sowing, there are some birds but there’s not enough, because the Law of Averages will work for you.
My mentor taught me, “You know, Mr. Rohn, there are only nine or ten real nasty, miserable people in the whole world. Now you know they move around a lot and you’re liable to bump into one once in awhile, but when you bump into one you say’ ‘There’s only 9 more like you–I can handle that–in the whole world?’”
 
Now here’s what else it says. The sower now keeps sowing the seed. Now the seed falls, the story says, on rocky ground where the soil is shallow. And the rocky ground where the soil is shallow is not of your making, because you had excellent seed and you were an ambitious sower.
So the rocky ground where the soil is shallow is not of your making. But here what it says happened. This time, the little seed that falls in the ground starts to grow and the little plant starts to grow. But the first hot day, it withers and dies. Not an easy thing to watch.
I finally get John started. Sure enough, three or four days later somebody says “Boo!” and he’s gone–doesn’t show up at the second meeting. And I say, “I thought sure John would last a week.”
What happened? Jot this down. The hot weather is going to get some. And this is not of your making. Here´s what you must say when that happens. “Isn’t that interesting?” What can you do? The answer is nothing.
You say, “Well, I’m going to try to change this!” I wouldn’t take that class. You know, the sun comes up in the east and somebody says, “Why is that?” I wouldn’t spend much time on that. Just let that happen.
Don’t go for this why, why, why stuff. I’m giving you the answers here. The answer is in the structure and in the consequences and is in the deal. The answer is in the deal. Anything beyond that is not worth studying.
You say, “Well, how come some just last a little while?” I wouldn’t sign up for that class. Here’s the answer: Some don’t stay. You just have to jot that down. And when some leave you say, “That’s one of those that don’t stay.”
Now, you know what category to put them in, and you can’t solve this now. It’s like rearranging the seasons. You can’t fool with that. All you can do is cooperate with the way things are set up. I didn’t set it up.
You say, “Well, it shouldn’t be this way.” Well, when you get your own planet you can rearrange this whole deal, but on this planet you´re a guest. You’ve got to take it as it comes.
Now, here is the secret to the ambitious sower with good seed. It said he kept on sowing.
Now, here’s what he had to do to keep on sowing. He had to discipline his disappointment. This is a key phrase now to use for the rest of your life. You must learn to discipline your disappointment. Because you didn’t set up the set up, and some are not going to stay, and that is not of your making.
Now, if you made gross errors and you ran them off, see that’d be different. Now you’re responsible for that. But if it’s in the normal course of things, this is the way things are.
Now, here’s what it says. The sower keeps on sowing. Now it says the seed falls on thorny ground. And somebody says, “Well, how much of this do you have to go through?”
Well, hang on. It’s not the end of the story now. Now the little seed falls on thorny ground and now the little plant starts to grow again but as the little plant starts to grow, the thorns choke it to death and it dies.
So jot this down. The thorns are going to get some. And that’s not of your making.
And what are these thorns? The story even called these little thorns little cares, little distractions, little something’s. Who knows what all they are.
I said, “John, we had a meeting last night. You weren’t here.” And John says, “Well, I can’t make every meeting.”
I say, “Why not? You’re part-time.”
He said, “Well, the screen door came off the hinges and you can’t just let your house fall apart. You’ve got to take some time and fix things up.”
And I can hear the thorns growing. He said, “Some extra trash had piled up in the garage. You can’t let mountains of trash take over. You’ve got to keep your trash hauled out.”
People who let little things cheat them out of big opportunities. People who let little things cheat them out of big opportunities, and you feel almost helpless. What could I do about that? And that’s nothing. And you say, “Well, why is this?”
I’m asking you not to sign up for that class. Don’t sign up for these, “Why is this?” classes. It’s just the way it is–like winter following fall and spring following winter.
So have you got that? The thorns are going to get some.
But now here’s the good news. Let’s read the rest of the story now quickly. The sower now keeps on sowing the seed. Keeps on sharing the story. Keeps on giving an invitation. Yes the invitation can be more powerful for me as it was one year later than it was the first month, because now I’m saying I’m making twice as much money part time as I’m making on my full-time job.
Yes, the story can be more powerful, but the Law of Averages is still going to work. But now here´s what the story says. Finally the seed falls on good ground. Now put this in parentheses. It always will, if you keep sowing. If you share a good idea long enough, it will fall on good people.
But now here’s the rest of that story. Some of the good ground did 30%. And some of the good ground did 60%. And some of the good ground did 100%.
You say, “Well, why the difference in numbers?” I wouldn’t sign up for that class! Have I said that often enough now? Don’t register for that class. It’s just the way it is.
Now I tried to get the 30´s to do 60. Found out it was more than I could handle. I used to say, “I’ll make them successful if it kills me.” I almost died. No, you can’t do that.
Here’s what you do. Let the 30’s do 30 to the best of their ability and keep doing 30, because that’s how they build their lifestyle and get what they want out of life. And let the 60’s do 60. And let the 100’s do 100.
Now how can you get some to do a 100%? You’ve got to go through all these experiences and you’ve got to talk to all these people.
