ADHD HELP IS HERE

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Contents of this page:

Alternative Names

ADD; ADHD; Childhood hyperkinesis

Definition    Return to top

ADHD is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination. For these problems to be diagnosed as ADHD, they must be out of the normal range for the child’s age and development.

Causes    Return to top

ADHD affects school performance and interpersonal relationships. Parents of children with ADHD are often exhausted and frustrated.

Neuroimaging studies suggest that the brains of children with ADHD are different from those of other children. These children handle neurotransmitters (including dopamine, serotonin, and adrenalin) differently from their peers.

ADHD is often genetic. Whatever the specific cause may be, it seems to be set in motion early in life as the brain is developing.

Depression, sleep deprivation, learning disabilities, tic disorders, and behavior problems may be confused with, or appear along with, ADHD. Every child suspected of having ADHD deserves a careful evaluation to sort out exactly what is contributing to the behaviors causing concern.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of childhood, affecting an estimated 3 – 5% of school aged children. It is diagnosed much more often in boys than in girls.

Most children with ADHD also have at least one other developmental or behavioral problem.

Symptoms    Return to top

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) divides the symptoms of ADHD into those of inattentiveness and those of hyperactivity and impulsivity.

To be diagnosed with ADHD, children should have at least 6 attention symptoms or 6 activity and impulsivity symptoms — to a degree beyond what would be expected for children their age.

The symptoms must be present for at least 6 months, observable in 2 or more settings, and not caused by another problem. The symptoms must be severe enough to cause significant difficulties. Some symptoms must be present before age 7.

Older children have ADHD in partial remission when they still have symptoms but no longer meet the full definition of the disorder.

Some children with ADHD primarily have the Inattentive Type, some the Hyperactive-Impulsive Type, and some the Combined Type. Those with the Inattentive type are less disruptive and are easier to miss being diagnosed with ADHD.

Inattention symptoms:

  1. Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork
  2. Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play
  3. Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
  4. Does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace
  5. Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
  6. Avoids or dislikes tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork)
  7. Often loses toys, assignments, pencils, books, or tools needed for tasks or activities
  8. Easily distracted
  9. Often forgetful in daily activities

Hyperactivity symptoms:

  1. Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat
  2. Leaves seat when remaining seated is expected
  3. Runs about or climbs in inappropriate situations
  4. Difficulty playing quietly
  5. Often “on the go,” acts as if “driven by a motor,” talks excessively

Impulsivity symptoms:

  1. Blurts out answers before questions have been completed
  2. Difficulty awaiting turn
  3. Interrupts or intrudes on others (butts into conversations or games)

Exams and Tests    Return to top

Too often, difficult children are incorrectly labeled with ADHD. On the other hand, many children who do have ADHD remain undiagnosed. In either case, related learning disabilities or mood problems are often missed. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued guidelines to bring more clarity to this issue.

The diagnosis is based on very specific symptoms, which must be present in more than one setting. The child should have a clinical evaluation if ADHD is suspected.

Evaluation may include:

  • Parent and teacher questionnaires (Connors, Burks)
  • Psychological evaluation of the child AND family including IQ testing and psychological testing
  • Complete developmental, mental, nutritional, physical, and psychosocial examination

Treatment    Return to top

The American Academy of Pediatrics has guidelines for treating ADHD:

  • Set specific, appropriate target goals to guide therapy.
  • Medication and behavior therapy should be started.
  • When treatment has not met the target goals, evaluate the original diagnosis, the possible presence of other conditions, and how well the treatment plan has been implemented.
  • Systematic follow-up is important to regularly reassess target goals, results, and any side effects of medications. Information should be gathered from parents, teachers, and the child.

ADHD is a frustrating problem. Alternative remedies have become quite popular, including herbs, supplements, and chiropractic manipulation. However, there is little or no solid evidence for many remedies marketed to parents.

Children who receive both behavioral treatment and medication often do the best. Medications should not be used just to make life easier for the parents or the school. There are now several different classes of ADHD medications that may be used alone or in combination. Some ADHD medicines have been linked to sudden death in children with heart problems. Talk to your doctor about which drug is best for your child.

The following may also help:

  • Limit distractions in the child’s environment.
  • Provide one-on-one instruction with teacher.
  • Make sure the child gets enough sleep.
  • Make sure the child gets a healthy, varied diet, with plenty of fiber and basic nutrients.

Outlook (Prognosis)    Return to top

ADHD is a long-term, chronic condition. About half of the children with ADHD will continue to have troublesome symptoms of inattention or impulsivity as adults. However, adults are often more capable of controlling behavior and masking difficulties.

Statistics show that there is an increased incidence in juvenile delinquency and adult encounters with the law among individuals who had ADHD as a child.

Every effort should be made to manage symptoms and direct the child’s energy to constructive and educational paths.

Possible Complications    Return to top

Many adults with ADHD are in successful jobs. Possible complications, if ADHD is not adequately treated, could include failure in school or other similar problems.

When to Contact a Medical Professional    Return to top

Call your health care provider if you or your child’s school personnel suspect the possibility of attention deficit disorder.

Prevention    Return to top

While there is no proven way to prevent ADHD itself, early identification and treatment can prevent many of the problems associated with ADHD.

WHAT ADD CAN DO TO YOU…

Oh what I would give for a good night’s sleep. . .

Lots of folks with ADHD have sleep problems. (So do lots of other people, but we won’t be talking about them here.) Some people wind up with sleep problems as a side effect of their medication, but many of them already had sleep problems.

ADHD can cause people to get to bed too late in several ways.

First, procrastinating, inefficiency, or poor planning. Some ADHD folks wind up getting to bed late because the day got away from them and they have to stay up longer to finish things.

Second, hyperfocus. It’s easy to get caught up in an enjoyable activity, like surfing the internet, reading, or watching TV/movies and not notice that time has flown by. So the person who wants to turn out the lights at midnight winds up staying up until two AM. Not intentionally, but the outcome is the same.

Third, rationalizing bad choices. Whereas with hyperfocus it just happens without thinking about it, with rationalization the person intentionally makes a bad choice but justifies it. For example, “I don’t have that much I have to do tomorrow, so I can be a little tired.” Other times the rationalization is simply, “I don’t want to go to bed yet”. Kind of a “damn the consequences” approach.

MOST DRY SKIN IS CAUSED BY

Causes

Most dry skin is caused by environmental exposures, such as:

  • Weather. In general, your skin is driest in winter, when temperatures and humidity levels plummet. Winter conditions also tend to make many existing skin conditions worse. But the reverse may be true if you live in desert regions, where summer temperatures can top 110 F and humidity levels sink to 10 percent or less.
  • Central heating and air conditioning. Central air and heating, wood-burning stoves, space heaters and fireplaces all reduce humidity and dry your skin.
  • Hot baths and showers. Frequent showering or bathing, especially if you like the water hot and your baths long, breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin. So does frequent swimming, particularly in heavily chlorinated pools.
  • Harsh soaps and detergents. Many popular soaps and detergents strip lipids and water from your skin. Deodorant and antibacterial soaps are usually the most damaging, as are many shampoos, which dry out your scalp.

Other factors
Other factors, including certain diseases, can significantly alter the function and appearance of your skin. These include:

  • Psoriasis. This skin condition is marked by a rapid buildup of rough, dry, dead skin cells that form thick scales.
  • Thyroid disorders. Hypothyroidism, a condition that occurs when your thyroid produces too little thyroid hormones, reduces the activity of your sweat and oil glands, leading to rough, dry skin.
  • Alcohol and drugs. Alcohol and caffeine can visibly dry your skin. Prescription drugs such as diuretics, antihistamines and isotretinoin (Accutane) also have a drying effect.
  • Dehydration. Severe diarrhea and vomiting, a high fever, profuse sweating during exercise or simply not drinking enough liquids can cause your body to lose more fluid than you take in. One of the first signs of dehydration is skin that has lost its elasticity.

ADHD BREAKING NEWS

ADHD Breaking News- What Every Parent Should Consider

Is your child just misbehaving or being unruly ? Child care therapists are beginning to question whether some ADHD cases have been misdiagnosed. Parents and some experts are afraid that the ADHD label is just an all too convenient tag for any problematical child.

In just ten years the prescriptions for the most widely used drug (Ritalin) for ADHD children in the UK has risen from 4,000 to 360,000! This represents an enormous cost to the the National Health Service to the tune of 28 million. But many parents are now questioning whether the term ADHD is a handy label for disobedient and badly behaved children.

Some experts argue that the number of children with ADHD is underestimated and that at least 1 in 20 children are suffering from it. Other experts say that the problem is exaggerated and many children diagnosed with ADHD do not actually have it !

You cannot easily diagnose ADHD and sometimes the diagnosis is interpreting a questionnaire and that is hardly objective. One way of making the distinction is that a child may only misbehave in certain situations or settings. The genuine ADHD child will have problems in all situations. It is a medical condition though and is present since birth.

Symptoms of ADHD are different from child to child. However certain behaviour patterns emerge. One main pattern concerns hyperactivity, the other impulsiveness. The child is constantly restless and cannot concentrate on any one task for more thn two seconds. The inability to calculate risks goes hand in hand with impulsive behaviour. The child will have difficulty in following instructions and will be distracted very easily. He or she will not be very good at taking turn in playing with peers.

Parents seem to be having more problems in controlling their children, There is a social reason for this in that many single parents have to work and bringing up children alone is a demanding task. Children themselves do not go out and play but are addicted to TV and playstations resulting also in increased consumption of snack foods which contain colourings and additives. recently there has been much debate about the role of these additives in kids’ food and how it may cause hyperactivity.

The medical profession has come in for some severe criticism as well. Many children are being mistakenly diagnosed as having ADHD when it is not true. Pharmaceutical companies are only too happy to see the incidence of this condition increase as sales of stimulants and non stimulant drugs rocket. There are questions about the side effects of these drugs which are worrying. Adderall, a popular drug was withdrawn in Canada because of a link with heart disease. Other research says that therapy is much more effective in the long term than drugs.

If you are having problems with your children and you may think they have ADHD, the link below will take to a doctor’s site whose children were diagnosed with ADHD. he has develioped a drug free method which will help you solve the problem of badly behaved children, whether they have ADHD or not.

PREGNANCY MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Pregnancy Alone Not A Risk for Mental Health Problems

MONDAY, July 7 (Health Day News) — Pregnancy alone isn’t associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders, a new study says.

It’s been suggested that pregnant women and those who’ve recently given birth are at high risk for psychiatric disorders, which can harm the health of their children, according to background information in the study.

To determine whether this was true, the study authors analyzed data from interviews with 43,093 people who took part in a survey on alcohol and substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. The respondents included 14,549 women, aged 18 to 50, who’d been pregnant within the past year.

“Past-year pregnant and postpartum women had significantly lower rates of alcohol use disorders and any substance use, except illicit drug use, than non-pregnant women,” wrote the study authors, from the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

Women who were pregnant at the time of the study had a lower risk of having any mood disorder, except major depression, than non-pregnant women. “Age, marital status, health status, stressful life events and history of traumatic experiences were all significantly associated with higher risk of psychiatric disorders in pregnant and postpartum women.”

Overall, pregnancy alone is not associated with increased risk of the most common mental disorders, the researchers concluded. However, they did identify certain groups of pregnant women with a particularly high prevalence of psychiatric disorders, including those aged 18 to 25 living without a partner, widowed, separated, divorced or never married, and those who experienced pregnancy complications or stressful life events.

“Given the critical importance of this life period for mothers and their offspring, urgent action is needed to increase detection and treatment of psychiatric disorders among pregnant and postpartum women in the United States,” the researchers wrote.

Autism and THE WELLNESS COMPANY products

Subject: Autism and THE WELLNESS COMPANY products

When you have valuable information, it’s important to share it with those you love and care about…

It’s been a while since I’ve updated you all on our progress. As you may recall, our son Tony (who is now 13 yrs old) is autistic. Autism is a developmental disability that impacts normal development of the brain in the area of social interaction and communication skills.

Autism is a difficult thing to understand. Doctors and experts still do not know everything there is to know. Yet, as a parent of an autistic child, that’s exactly what you want—to know everything so you can fix it. There are still many mysteries surrounding autism. The most important thing to remember through it all is that there is hope. Autism isn’t a death sentence. There have been many advancements in the last few years and many autistic children have gone on to lead wonderful, rich lives. So, if you are a parent of an autistic child, do what I do… take a deep breath and say quietly to yourself every day: “There is Hope”.

Sadly, Autism is far too common. Autism effects 1 in 250 births, and is three to four times more prevalent in boys than girls. This means that 1.5 million Americans are believed to have some form of autism. No one knows what causes Autism.
Children and adults with autism typically experience difficulty with:
· communication, both verbal and nonverbal.
· making and maintaining consistent eye contact with others.
· attention span.
· social skills. Autistic people have a strong propensity toward exclusive activities.
· routines or repetitive behaviors, i.e. obsessively repeating words or body movements, or arranging belongings in a very specific way.
· self-help skills, such as toileting, feeding, dressing, brushing teeth, etc.
One person with autism may have very different symptoms and behaviors than another. Because of these differences, doctors now think of autism as a “spectrum” disorder, or a group of disorders with a range of similar features. A person with mild autistic symptoms is at one end of the spectrum. A person with severe symptoms is at the other end of the spectrum. Because of this, autism is now often called autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Although no one day is the same, I can say that every day is a journey. Please share this information with your friends, neighbors, business associates, and anyone who’s life may be touched by autism. Most will say their lives are good, even with this disorder in their lives… but some of us can say our lives are GREAT and we have the help of some fantastic products that are allowing our children to heal their bodies from the inside out. I’m proud to say that Tony is currently medication-free and is progressing every single day. We realize that we still have a long road ahead of us. THE WELLNESS COMPANY has also allowed me to work from home for the past 5 years. So, when “life” happens, I can always count on my strong, residual income. And the best news is, it’s only going to get better!
Here are just a few of the ways that THE WELLNESS COMPANY products can enhance the lives of autistic children:
1. GET RID OF ALL TOXINS IN THE HOME. I can not stress how important this is. Convert your home to THE WELLNESS COMPANY EcoSense products. These kids have a very, very low tolerance to chemicals and it affects their behavior. Their behavior is very unpredictable — at any age. Getting rid of poisonous household products will reduce the stress load in your lives.
2. Take full doses of the supplement products daily. If your child can not swallow pills, give him/her 1 chewable of the  chldern daily supplements  for every 25 lbs. If your child can swallow pills, give him/her the daily supplement Gold packets or the suplplement for Life packets. Get as much as you can into their system! There are no other vitamins on the market with this PATENTED DELIVERY PROCESS called Fructose Compounding. It allows the minerals to be absorbed at the cellular level. Now, getting your child to take these vitamins may not always be easy, and they won’t always want to take them all… but remember: autism is a creature of habit. Once you establish this as a habit, you are home free! Don’t give up! It is VERY worth the fight! It’s up to YOU to create this habit.
3. Take 3-4 capsules of another supplement Plus daily. This will alleviate allergy symptoms all year round and allow them to concentrate. It’s also used to help symptoms of ADD/ADHD and other behavioral issues. Due to the super antioxidants in the Provex line, this will allow you to stop any/all allergy medications over time and with the help of your physician.
4. Take 4-6  of the supplement daily. Research shows that Omega-3’s are brain food. In 1995, researchers reported that children with ADHD and similar behavioral problems had significantly lower concentrations of key fatty acids. Additional support comes from evidence that low plasma omega-3 levels in boys are associated with behavior problems, temper tantrums, sleep disorders plus focus and learning challenges. There’s also many clinical trials that have reported using a fish oil supplement in children with autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. The great news it that supplement has both fish oil and Omega-3’s! We have seen an incredible language burst and conversation skills while using this product.
5. Use cleaning products  for bath time. Tony will still swallow the bath water at times, and now I don’t have to worry about the chemicals in bubble bath or any other bath product. our cleaning products  is wonderfully soothing and it leaves his skin baby soft, due to the natural properties of tea tree  oil. It’s inexpensive and makes tons of bubbles in the tub. Baths are Tony’s “escape” or relaxing time — and he is known to take 3-4 baths a day sometimes.
6. Use pain relief  lotion at bedtime. This not only calms him, but it helps him breathe easier. I apply it to his chest, his legs and even his feet. He loves it! It’s great for his sensory needs. It has a warming effect (due to the penetration of the actual tea tree oil the product) and has a nice, calming smell.
7. Spray bedding/pillows everyday with diluted mu-til purpose cleaning products. This will kill dust mites, mold, mildew and other hidden germs that can “fog” their brain. (Again, it’s the natural fungicide properties of the tra tree  oil in this products that kills mold and mildew on contact)
Parents of autistic children are looking for a better quality of life for their child, whom they love and adore just as any other child. If you know someone who’s touched by autism, please take the time to introduce them to THE WELLNESS COMPANY. They will thank you, I promise you that. These simple, inexpensive changes have made all the difference in our little corner of the world. Thank you, THE WELLNESS COMPANY!

FEAR IS OVERCOME WITH ACTION
One of the greatest surprises you’ll experience,
is when you discover that you can do
what you were afraid you couldn’t do.

Your obstacles will melt away,
if instead of cowering before them,
you make up your mind to walk boldly through them.

Do the thing you fear and fear disappears.
Confront your fears, list them, get to know them
and only then will you be able to put them aside
and move ahead.

When you face the things that scare you,
you open the door to freedom.

The only thing you have to fear, is fear itself..
